AstrBot is a self-hostable platform for running AI assistants inside messaging apps such as Telegram, Discord, Slack and QQ. It connects those chat accounts to model providers, document retrieval and optional tools through a web dashboard.

The project includes a built-in agent runner and connections to platforms such as Dify and Coze. Python plugins, MCP tools and reusable skills provide different ways to extend what the bot can do. Use this as a first read, not a recommendation. Open the original project before trusting details like terms, limits, privacy, cost, setup, or safety.

What it is

A bot platform between messaging and models

AstrBot receives messages through platform adapters, manages conversations and passes requests to configured AI services. The messaging connection and model provider are separate parts of the setup, so choosing a chat platform does not itself choose the model that answers.

Why it stands out

Different conversations can use different setups

The dashboard can assign a configuration profile to a bot or bind profiles to particular conversations. Profiles determine settings such as the knowledge bases and enabled plugins used in that conversation. This lets a deployment accommodate chats with different needs.

Availability

Source, releases and several deployment routes

The project documents Docker, Python command-line and separate desktop routes. Current package metadata requires Python 3.12 or later. Model services and messaging accounts have their own setup requirements. The metadata declares AGPL-3.0-or-later; see the main repository for current terms.

Why it matters

What makes it useful

A community or team may want an assistant available where its discussions already happen. AstrBot can connect a messaging bot to maintained reference material, such as project instructions or a group FAQ, so members can ask about it in the conversation. Its knowledge-base tools retrieve passages for the model to use when drafting a reply.

Notable points

What stands out

Document retrieval and answer generation have different jobs. AstrBot uses an embedding model to index material and find relevant passages, then a chat model to compose the answer; a reranking model is optional. Uploading documents does not train the chat model or activate that collection for every bot. The relevant knowledge base must be selected by the conversation configuration. The retrieval test lets you examine which passages were found before judging the resulting answer.

Before using

What to review

With remote embedding services, document text and retrieval queries go to that provider; retrieved passages go to the chat model. Self-hosting AstrBot does not by itself make those model requests local.

The plugin documentation says plugins run in AstrBot's Python environment and recommends installing them from trusted sources. Agent execution restrictions do not automatically isolate arbitrary plugin code. Check the plugin sources and the selection allowed by each profile.

If you enable computer-use tools, check the file, execution and network permissions assigned to bot members and administrators. In Docker, the local execution environment is the container, not automatically the host computer. Available isolation depends on the operating system and runtime configuration.

Reader fit

Who may find it relevant

AstrBot is relevant to community maintainers, team bot builders and developers who want to configure an assistant around existing messaging channels. It particularly suits people comfortable managing bot credentials, model endpoints and a running deployment. Its Python extension interface also gives developers a way to add behavior specific to their own community or workflow.

Editorial note

Why LifeHubber lists it

LifeHubber lists AstrBot because its messaging adapters are paired with profiles that can be assigned to specific conversations. A maintainer supporting several groups can give a public help chat its own reference documents and plugin selection, while a project chat uses a different setup. That makes AstrBot relevant when the task is to operate several chat-facing assistants with different audiences, even when their model provider is shared.
